The University of Graz was founded in 1585 and with more than 30 000 students it is the second largest university of Austria. Several famous physics professors worked at Graz university like Ludwig Boltzmann, Erwin Schrödinger or Victor Hess. The astrophysics group is part of the Institute of Physics. It also runs the Kanzelhöhe solar observatory and the Lustbühel observatory station (which is mainly for nighttime observations). Astrophysics is part of the physics curriculum.

Besides solar physics, research in astrophysics in Graz covers astrobiology, exoplanets, solar-like stars and gravitational lenses.
