Technical Documentation for Territorial Planning of the European Solar Telescope

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) has launched a public tender (Ref. LIC-25-001) for the drafting of the Preliminary Construction Project ("Proyecto Básico") and associated technical documentation required to initiate the territorial planning process for the European Solar Telescope (EST), to be located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma, Spain).

This contract includes:

  • The definition and consolidation of the design of EST's key infrastructure: the Telescope Pier, the Main and Auxiliary Buildings, and related civil works.

  • Preparation of the Preliminary Construction Project ("Proyecto Básico") documentation in compliance with Spanish and Canary Islands’ planning and environmental regulations.

  • Execution and analysis of geotechnical surveys at the selected site near the edge of La Caldera de Taburiente.

  • Development of thermal and structural studies supporting the building design.

  • Preparation of documentation required for the environmental and territorial planning processing of the project according to Spanish law.

Call For Tenders: Preliminary design of the EST Heat Rejecter

“Diseño preliminar del sistema diafragma de campo con supresión de calor por reflexión para el Telescopio Solar Europeo”

If you would like to track this bid, you can do it on the State Contracting Platform.

Please notice the code (expediente) assigned to this procurement: LIC-21-026

Heat Rejecter subsystem

CLOSED. The EST Heat Rejecter Assembly lies at the prime focus (F1) of the European Solar Telescope and operates as first field stop, selecting the FoV of the telescope and reflecting a large amount of the solar disk radiation. The aim of the HR is to stop the solar radiation falling outside the transmitted FoV avoiding the development of thermal plumes and the generation of internal seeing. Moreover, the HR Assembly integrates a pointing measurement capability to analyse the solar image at F1 in order to measure the location of the solar disk where the telescope is pointing to.

The HR baseline design consists essentially in a flat reflective cooled surface inclined 45º with respect to the optical axis.

Heat rejecter

At F1, the HR Mirror sends out of the optical path most of the incoming radiation while selecting a specific FoV, named “transmitted FoV”. The energy which cannot be rejected, and is absorbed by the mirror, shall be dissipated by the cooling system, which has also the responsibility of keeping the temperature of the reflective surface and the external surfaces of the assembly as close as possible to ambient temperature. The telescope spider keeps the HR assembly in position connected to the telescope elevation structure by four structural links, and it serves as support for the ducts for coolant and cabling.

Deformable Mirrors Call for Tender (CLOSED)

A public call for tenders for the acquisition of three deformable mirrors (DM) for the MCAO demonstration bank (650,000 €) has been recently published throught the official Tenders Portal of the INSTITUTO DE ASTROFÍSICA DE CANARIAS.

The European Solar Telescope (EST) will be equipped with an MCAO system to provide excellent image correction within a one-arcminute field. A demonstrator of solar MCAO with similar requirements as the EST is being designed at IAC headquarters.

This bench will test new and existing concepts for solar MCAO, as, e.g., the integration of neuronal networks in the reconstruction process.

The next figure shows the technical concept of the bench in one of the several configurations possible.

  • A high-resolution image of the Sun will be created and perturbed by a turbulence simulator with different phase screens placed at different heights.
  • MCAO correction will be performed by
    • DM0: one pupil DM
    • DM1 and DM2: two altitude DMs.
  • Two wide-field wavefront sensors (LOWFS, HOWFS) will be used to perform the tomography.
  • A scientific camera will evaluate the performance within a one-arcminute field.

The bench is currently under construction. Construction and alignment of the system is expected to be finished in the coming year, though first results from completed modules will be available sooner.

The currrent public tender announcement is related to the acquisition of the three deformable mirrors mentioned above (DM0, DM1 and DM2). The available budget for purchasing the three items is 650.000 €.

Candidates shall submit their proposals before 19 September 2019.

All the relevant documentation can be found at IAC's Tenders Portal.
