The lower layers of the solar atmosphere
Hinode Broadband Filter Imager
This movie shows a sunspot observed very close to the solar limb by the Broadband Filter Imager (BFI) aboard the Japanese Hinode satellite. The observations were made in two different wavelengths that sample different heights in the solar atmosphere. The first one corresponds to the G-band around 405 nm and shows the photosphere, the deepest layer of the atmosphere (blue colors). The second wavelength correspond to the Ca II H line at 396 nm, and samples the chromosphere (orange colors).
The movie shows the sunspot structure and dynamics from the photosphere to the chromosphere. While the area seems to be nearly a rest in the photosphere, the chromospheric activity is very intense above the spot, with rapid jets and transient brightenings that reflect the reorganization of the magnetic field lines of the sunspot.
